Smart metering for non-household customers
In 2025 we’re embarking on one of our most exciting and ambitious programmes to upgrade our water meters to smart meters.
Why are we installing them?
Water meters are a brilliant way to help non-household customers save water. More than 90% of non-household customers have a water meter and only pay for what they use.
Our smart meter programme is one of the ways we’re helping to keep more water in the environment in the face of a changing climate and a growing population.
Smart meters collect water use data every day, compared with our current meters which are only read every six months – here are some of the benefits:
Where and when?
We’ll be installing smart meters in a phased approach between mid 2025 and 2035.
We’ll be starting in the Salisbury area before moving north to Amesbury and Shrewton and surrounding villages.
Why are we starting here?
This part of our region currently has the greatest impact on the water environment and some of our most precious habitats – chalk streams.
Chalk streams and rivers are extremely rare. Conservationists and river experts consider them to be as unique as the Amazonian rainforest or Great Barrier Reef.
In fact, there are only around 200 chalk streams in the world, and half of them are in our region. The clear, nutrient-rich waters of these streams support a diverse range of species including water voles, kingfishers and otters.
Getting your premises smart meter ready
In preparation for installing smart meters, we are now starting to do some work on the external water supply pipes that feed customers’ premises. This may include installing a new meter chamber, making changes to an existing one, or replacing the stop tap.
Most customer supply pipes won’t need any work. If we need to work on the pipe that connects to your premises or carry out work in your street, we’ll send you a letter before we come to let you know.
